Higher Bank Residential Home in Blackburn

Like many families who find themselves having to cope with the increasing needs of an elderly relative, we agonised over the looming prospect of having to place our Mother in a care home. Despite our determined efforts to keep Mum in her own house, it became evident that our lack of experience and the demands of work and family, meant that keeping Mum at home was not necessarily the best thing we could do for her. We visited several care homes in the area and although some were very well run and professionally staffed, we somehow felt that our Mother’s happiness would be at stake, were we to place her in residence at any we had visited.

It isn’t too dramatic to say that our prayers were answered, when a friend told us about Higher Bank. We were very impressed when we visited, not only by the open and friendly attitude of the staff, but by the obvious contentment and happiness that the residents seemed to enjoy. We were allowed to take Mum in for a trial stay; and quite simply we were confident that she was being very well cared for. Most important was that Mum herself evidently liked the staff and facilities, so we decided to extend the trial, and eventually Mum stayed at Higher Bank for her last years.

There are a number of things that make Higher Bank outstanding. But our consensus is that it is probably due to the fact that it is a family run home, staffed by conscientious, compassionate and wholly dedicated professionals. We invariably found our Mother with a smile on her face on our regular visits, often having fun with her new friends. We witnessed the careful and considerate monitoring of our Mother and the other residents, to levels we now believe may not always be apparent in all other care homes. It seems to be an ethic; hard wired in the minds of the staff, that they would always be prepared to walk the extra mile to meet the needs of those they care for. Communication with family members by staff, such as at times of poor health, was at a premium, and again demonstrated the lengths the staff are prepared to go to.

Knowing that our Mum was happy, comfortable, and couldn’t have been better cared for, is something we cannot place a high enough value on.
